Long story short...

Here is a maths question

FMW SURVIVOR TIEBREAKER Gif

Solve it first and your tribe wins!!

Upon successful completition the long story will be explained and the winner will be announced. But needless to say, one individual has forced this round into a meaningless waste of time which has not resulted in this...

Have at it gentlemen.

And for the record, I'm still under the stance that that one individual should have lost the challenge for his team.

Leon, would you allow me, a maths student who does integration on an almost daily basis, the honour of saying whether people are correct or incorrect?

Go for it easty. I've never studied integration ever so I'd be impressed with myself if my answer is right.

Just saw this now, been asleep/going to work. I'll attempt to solve but I've never done a math problem such as this either so who knows.

Alex?

Ro?

Drew?

All answers so far are wrong. So as a piece of advice, I will annouce it when the correct answer has been posted. Til then please show some working in your answers to show its not just a guess.

I actually have done these type of equations on many occasions in college... I however haven't been to college since I was 22.

HUmm, time to remember. Wonder if I still have my college math books...

BAH okay my cobwebs are out of my head and PX had the right answer, it is 45. This is a simple definite Integral.

= 3x^2 dx, b = 4, a =1

=[3(4)^2] - [3(1)^2]

= 48 - 3

= 45

If the answer you have is 135, then you need to learn how to do math. To get that answer your equation would have to be = (3x)^2 dx.

Hopefully this is not the case, but PX is right.

GODDAMN I knew I had it.

I asked the guy beside me at work because I as rusty on my antiderivatives "F(b)-F(a)"

I got 45 but he was like "naw that isn't it" and the left for lunch.

blasted thing.

Yup lol, I had to look at some old work for it to comeback to me...

Now I remember something that was thought to me in college.

IN new knowledge, OUT 10th Birthday Party (sucked anyways)

How long you figure before we hear from Leon again? I put my money on 24 hours

Probably, unless he's doing Australian math, in which case the answer is an upside 45.

My problem was I spent so long trying to remember the use of the Integration symbol before it finally dawned on me that in this instance it's provided to provide the plot points.

Unless Leon is looking for the integration and not the derivative...

Well, for what equation he has posted, there's just the one way to add it up. The fact that it shows a min and max is indication of a definitive integral.

Yeah that's what I'm thinking too,

Though I noticed an integration calculator online, so for fun I plugged it in and it spit out:

{(3*x^4)/4, x^3, 4*x^3}

And that simply is too much time to solve.

Ha! In Leon's face, I thought myself integration today, I'm happy I got it right, my method is the same as Eric's. Of course, if Leon rules us as still being wrong, then Survivor will freeze Razz

Then again, Easty knows his maths so he could settle this

Okay, if you evaluate the integral (definite integral) and not the derivative the answer is 63.

http://www.mathway.com/answer.aspx?p=ccal?p=integralSMB081,4,3xSMB072,SMB09SMB01?p=2015?p=?p=?p=?p=?p=?p=?p=0?p=?p=

That's all I got. But the answer is 63 not 45.

I couldn't tell yah, you have to pay to get the steps haha.

Doing the math by hand for a derivative I kept getting 45, but leon said it was wrong.

So I typed in "math equation solver" to google, mathway was the first one to come up, I plugged in the equation in integral evaluation form (I only know how because of the might T-I85 Graphing Calculator). You plug it in like " [1, 4, 3x^2,] = " and it evaluates the integral.

That's all I got Smile

also here: http://www.webmath.com/_answer.php

I can't find a step by step thing.

How did Leon tell you it was wrong, I was on AIM waiting around for him for awhile and he wasn't even on. You know, yet you got inside scoop lol. *shakes fist @ Leon*

From a scientific calculator, I get 63.00001, I've been trying a few different things by hand and nothing.

Also I would like to know what is right and wrong in our answers originally.

Well Leon said in this thread earlier that 45 was wrong (because PX had been the only one to answer)

And yah I can't show my work cuz I can't do it by hand, gimme a scientific calculator and you got it. How else are you supposed to pass university calculus?

This is actually very simple calculus and you would learn this on day one of Defenitive Intervals. I Aced my College calculus class, so it's slowly coming back to me. There is much much harder shit than this.

Grrrrrrr at my work.

My very first paper scribble was correct (but flawed (adding mistake lol))

It goes like this...

The derivative of 3x^2 is x^3, so...

= x^3 - X^3

= 4^3 - 1^3

= 64 - 1

= 63

I completely forgot to redo the derivative when I calculated the second time, so when I got 45, and someone else had gotten 45 and I didn't review my calculation. HUmmmm, I should not trust PX's math anymore. That's twice in the same challenge grrrr lol *shakes fist @ PX*.

At least I was able to show my work, that should get me 100%. Not showing your work in school is = to bad! Cool
